The Making of a Great Ministry Team Member

Calling and Community Matrix

The making of a great ministry team leader revolves around Call and Community. So where do you fit on the Matrix? Are you a Prophet, an Employee, a Clique? Click below to read more about what each box means.

  1. Employee – low call and community. They just show up, do their work and go home. Punch in and punch out.
  2. Individualist – Some heart for ministry, but wants to do it on their own. Loves others – just doesn’t trust them. “If you want something done right…”
  3. Rebel – Called to save the lost with no regard for bringing others along; no regard for budgets, rules, timelines. Rebel with a good cause.
  4. Clique – Loves coming to work. Loves the people here. Highly involved in their lives. Lunches and coffee breaks are important. Forgets or neglects that we are a ministry and have work to do.
  5. Union – Sacrifice the call is everyone is happy. Gets upset if someone else is wronged or perceived wronged. Any kind of change in protocol or reorganization incapacitates them – b/c “things will never be the same…”
  6. Partner – pretty well balanced person. Loves the people and has a call to ministry. They partner well with those around them and contribute to the call of ministry.
  7. Prophet – high level of call and utilizes people – OK. Their call is so high that they do struggle when others don’t seem to care about the lost, the hurting…
  8. Shepherd – People matter highly and the call is somewhat important. They gather people together during times of stress or hard times. They are sensitive to the needs of the flock.
  9. Called Community – Special few who can balance a high call and high community. They motivate people to “do life” together as they carry out the Great Commission. Few and far between.

You can do this as a self-evaluation…or as a ministry team…the goal is to be honest and find out where you really are, and then determine the changes that you need to make to grow more towards the upper right quadron.

If you’re a ministry leader, it would be wise to rank everyone on your team on this matrix…that will help you as you work with and lead them. Have your own team members rank themselves, and then meet with you about where they think they are. This can be a great way to open up honest dialogue about positive change.

FYI: Through doing this exercise, I’ve realized that I’m pretty good with the community thing…but I’ve been missing the mark on the carrying out the Great Commission.

    Nevan,

This is a good self-exam that we all need to take. We’ve got to keep pushing toward the “Called Community” so we don’t slide down to simply being an employee. There’s no room for coasting is there? You can’t coast and go uphill. If you’re coasting your heading downhill. Thanks for the reminder to pedal hard and work toward being one of the special few.

Thanks for this post. I would love to do this during a time together with others on staff. Are there more pieces to this? I am a little puzzled about how I would share it????
Maybe if I dig a little deeper I’ll be able to figure that out. Good stuff though.

Good stuff…Do you think it’s possible to move in and out of these levels at times?

Absolutely…some days I’m in the REBEL category and some days I move to the SHEPHERD category. I think this is due to differing work loads depending on the day. It gives me a good idea of how I need to move those lines over and up towards the Called Community sqaure.
