Servants can bring glory to God

Last Sunday evening our Pastor made this statement during his sermon: “Servants can bring glory to God.”

Now, the way my mind works, I think over everything way too much.  But thinking about it brought this thought to my mind: Volunteers are good.  Servants are better.

You can have tons of volunteers in your ministry, and people will look in and say, “Great!  They’re having an effective ministry.  Just look at all of the volunteers.”  But are you really?  What is the heart attitude of those serving?  Is it a “I’m doing this because I have to do it to fulfill an obligation” or is it a “I honestly want to serve”?

A volunteer brings no glory to God.  A volunteer is all about bringing glory to themselves.  They are inward focused in their service.  On the other hand, a servant is outward focused.  They’re all about bringing glory to God.  If they are truly serving with a servants heart, ministering will not be a chore to them.

The same goes for your life.  As a children’s pastor, do you see your ministry as a task to be checked off a list, a job that must be done; or do you see it as a joy, and get invigorated every time you step foot in the ministry room.  I know that many times I will go through some times where ministry is just frustrating.  It’s a task, a chore.  Then I realize the problem was not the ministry, but my heart attitude.  So I get that right, and ministry is exciting again.

So take the time to examine your motives.  Is everything right?  If not, dive into a Bible study, prayer, spending more time with other ministers, and get yourself excited about ministry again.  A note about spending time with other ministers: If you spend time around other Children’s Ministers who are struggling with ministry being a chore, it probably won’t help much.  Find an invigorating, excited person, and choose to spend time with them.

Are you ready to glorify God?  I am.  That’s the way I see it.

Good stuff…I agree as leaders we should recruit volunteers and disciple them into becoming servants.

I rereading “Volunteers that Stick” and that is emphasized throughout the book. If you move volunteers to the servanthood level you will have volunteers that stick.

One of my heroes is General Roy Evans. You talk about a servant’s heart wow!!! Every time I’m around that dude I feel like I don’t love Jesus and kids near enough.

That is the kind of guy we need to be around. He leads hundreds of people and many of his staff are a revolving door of people each summer. I am convinced after years of being around him and watching what goes on at Camp Dry Gulch that his servant’s heart and love for kids is so strong that he is able to move the majority of his short term staff from volunteers looking for a “fun” summer job to servants that are laying down their lives for those around them.

Wow I’d love to see a blog from each of you guys on 2 or 3 heroes in your lives and why.

Chris - GREAT suggestion, and I can’t wait to see them take you up on it. I have more than a little influence on one of them. So Evan, how about you lead the charge?
