Am I Better?

am-i-betterYesterday I was at Converse Elementary School because my church brought Tommy Toombs to town for school convocations and a big outreach event (more about that later). Before the convo, I stepped in the teachers lounge to get a drink. On the bulletin board, I found two excellent posters. I’ll share the second one with you tomorrow.

“Am I a better educator than I was a year ago?” This was the theme of the first staff meeting at Converse Elementary this year. Immediately I personalized it. Am I a better children’s pastor than I was a year ago? A better father? A better husband? A better Christian? Ask yourself the same question.

I ran across a book recently called, “Quit Your Job and Grow Some Hair”. The book is about 5 years old but makes you do some thinking. I’m not telling you to quit your job at the church. The point I’m making (and the point of the book) is this: Don’t grow stagnate in your job but commit to excellence in everything you do. Sometimes this means you might need to quit and start over again, but I’ve found that it’s not normally the case. Excellence is a choice. If you are a better children’s pastor than you were last year, it’s because you chose to be. That’s the way I see it.

Great reminder, Ryan! It’s easy to just keep doing the same things over and over, both personally and in ministry. As a ministry leader, the challenge for me is to not only set goals for my own life and ministry, but also to motivate and support those who serve in the ministry I lead to work towards excellence.
